Title: El Dorado Productions & 'Passion & Poetry' updated release info!
Post by Mike S. on 06/17/09 at 5:13am
The 2 - disc Special Edition DVD of this feature length documentary finally will be released this July.

Independently produced the making of this project went on for many years. The last three years the film played international festivals and in 2005 bits of the filmed material were used for PASSION & POETRY: MAJOR DUNDEE, a 22 min. documentary included on Sony's DVD of the extended cut of MAJOR DUNDEE. In 2007 I added PASSION & POETRY: SAM PECKINPAH's STRAW DOGS (approx. 60 minutes) for the German 2 - Disk Special Edition (red Digi-Box).
Hopefully I'll find a label in the future to make a SE of CROSS OF IRON. PASSION & POETRY: SAM's WAR is a 60 minute doc I'm preparing for 2010...

The upcoming PASSION & POETRY - THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH DVD-release includes a bonus disc with 150 min. of additional documentaries. I don't know yet whether the set will ever be released in the US or the UK. But the DVD's are codefree (PAL!) and all the content is in English anyway, as the film was shot in English language (with optional German subtitles only):

Disc 1:
PASSION & POETRY - THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH 115 min.
(audio - commentary by Mike Siegel in German & English language)

Disc 2:
STORIES ON A STORYTELLER three part documentary with additional interviews
- Pt1: THE WESTERNER  29 min.
- Pt2: ART & SUCCESS  36 min.
- Pt3: POET ON THE LOOSE  38 min.

MAPACHE TERRITORY 15 min.
Featurette on the WILD BUNCH locations in Mexico

ERNEST BORGNINE ON THE WILD BUNCH  15 min.
Interview featurette

MIKE’s HOMEMOVIES  14 min.
Behind the scenes, Retrospectives & Festivals

On youtube there's a trailer to watch and also the 15 minute MAPACHE TERRITORY uploaded in two parts.
It will be available in july directly from the film makers website, eBay and Amazon.de - so far...

The cover sheet will be two-sided (the backside is without the new German rating logo '16' we have to attach since March)

The release was postponed and delayed time and time again. With 270 minutes the thing is just too complicated for a one man company. Hours before the printing we discovered a hidden mistake in the master files for the menue and had to do it again. The problem these last weeks is checking the DVD's contents by watching it all over again and again. Dozens of hours.

I think we finally made it now and the DVD will be produced next week. 8 more days then and it is here with me or Amazon.de (for those who want to support me - order it from my website  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register )

Here's the cover (!! It is two-sided. Not the slipcase of course, but the inlay. The backside is without the ugly rating '12' box!!).
Some menues examples and the booklet cover (German text; the DVD's have an English menue and are in English language in their entitety).

Hi Mike,
I have ordered your DVD on Amazon.de in mid July and the order seems to be pending... What's best to do? Be a little more patient or see things directly with you?
I already have the film, but I want to support you - and see the bonuses...
By the way, cheers again for the German Straw dogs DVD issue.

Mike, I suspect some older fans, like myself, are technoimpaired. Whatever codefree and PAL mean is beyond me. Can I play the dvd on a regular US dvd player?

Codefree means you can play it worldwide on all DVD players.

Pal is a European TV norm which works due to technical reasons with 25 frames per second (in cinema 24 frames per second). But that's no greater problem for your player.

It not only looks great - it is! I had the great pleasure of viewing Mike's masterpiece today on dvd. A magnificent piece of film making. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but maybe a few hymns would be in order.
This is a riveting documentary about the man, his talent and his demons. Sam affected every person he ever came in contact with and Mike's interviews hit all the right notes. Mike's passion and poetry shine here. Buy it and enjoy.

For anyone keeping track, the second dvd of supplemental interviews is as good as the first. It's less structured with fuller interviews and seems somewhat more relaxed as the speakers provide more anecdotal stories about Sam.
I would give anything to shoot the breeze with L.Q. Jones or Bo Hopkins. They are fabulous yarnspinners.

Ok, I saw both discs yesterday and I have to say it's really a great documentary (and I see a lot of docus). And it's very clever too, because it doesn't try to cover everything Peckinpah or go deep on the movies, but just to tell the man, in a really honest way. Certainly, there were some interviews that I would have loved to see, like James Caan (who apparently remembers Sam very fondly and considers Killer Elite amongst his favourite movies), Burt Young, Dennis Hopper, Graig T. Nelson, Rutger Hauer, etc. but you can't have it all.
Again, Mike, thanks a bunch and congratulations for this work of passion.
I think I'm gonna watch it again next week, because there are a couple of questions I wanted you to ask.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it.

Of course I would have wanted EVERYBODY to be in it :). Actually with the exception of CRAIG T. I contacted everybody else on the above list. And many more people, many times... Nailing down those people is very difficult. They work a lot, travel a lot. Doing that kind of stuff is difficult, getting Kristofferson took me two years for instance (of course I could have taken a plane to Hawaii where he lives. But nobody wanted to pay the airfare :).
In the end I was happy with the 'cast': another thing is that if you have 37 interviews or whatever, everybody just pops up for 2 minutes or so. I hate that. Sometimes I see docs and a favorite of mine shows up for just TWO LINES. That's a waste of production value or a it shows that the film maker didn't get more than a minute worth of interesting stuff out of the person.
I filmed 30 hrs. and I'm really happy it isn't more. The sweat on the floor of the editing room is a witness of that statement :)

(Who told you Jimmy Caan mentioned KILLER ELITE as one of his favorites ??)

Mike, mine wasn't obviousley a critic of your documentary, which I have seen now three times (yes, it's that good). And as I wrote before, I love how the interviews go deep on Peckinpah (the man, the director), BUT seeing other docs on Sam (like SP - Man of Iron or SP - Portrait) the interviewed people are often the same, while I never have seen Caan or Hoffman (only in on location interviews), Hopper or Burt Young talk about him. Actually Hauer and Neslon are in the Alpha to Omega doc. That's why I love the interview with Roger Fritz in P&P. I've done my fair share of interviews and totally get the logistic and financial undertakings in such a project, so let me say again, what a great work you did.

Regarding the Caan quote, I'm not sure. I read I read that in an interview with him at the time when Way of the Gun came out. I was looking through my files today, but I can't find the quote (if it pops up, I'll post it here).
But I found this interview Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register with Caan, where he says:

TONY MACKLIN: How are you?

JAMES CAAN: Hey, man, I don't know. I've been talking so much I forgot.

I had to wait 45 minutes for you, but it's nothing like the time I waited in a parking lot for four hours for Sam Peckinpah.

[hearty laugh] You should consider yourself lucky. I remember waiting a day — and I was doing a movie [The Killer Elite, 1975] with him.

And I go in and sit down with Sam, and he says, "What are you asking those fucking questions for? That's a fucking dumb question."

That's Sam.

But then we hit it off, and it was fine. How was it working with him? Tough?

No. You know what? He was like a great intimidator, but he found out really quick — I told him I would kick his fucking ass. And he kind of liked that.

I think he was playing people — to see what reactions he could get.

One day they set off an explosion, real close to my face.

So that's what happened to your face?

[laughs] I said to Sam, "I'll beat you like a redheaded stepchild." He was great, though, just insane. As a matter of fact, when someone wrote a book about him, I was asked to give a quote for the cover. They had four quotes on the back. He called and said mine was the best. I had written, "Two more signatures and I'll have him committed."

If I remember right, it's in Weddle's book, Cann was the one who hooked Peckinpah with cocaine. So they probably were coked out of their minds during that period.

I recently received from Mike the following:

- The 576 page book "Passion & Poetry: Sam Peckinpah in Pictures"
- The 2-disc DVD set "Passion & Poetry: The Ballad of Sam Peckinpah"

The book is true to its title with countless images spanning Peckinpah's life and career. Many are rare, behind-the-scenes or candid photographs that add a personal dimension to the films and the participants. All are reproduced beautifully on the quality paper used throughout, and the last 90 pages or so are in color. In spite of the English title, the supporting text is in German and so is largely inaccessible to me. The book is arranged according to key phases in Peckinpah’s life and career with each film naturally receiving its own individual chapter. There is a foreword by Vadim Glowna (who starred in “Cross of Iron” and sadly passed away earlier this year) and a final chapter dedicated to individual reminiscences about Peckinpah by many of his collaborators. The exhaustive listings in the appendix of Peckinpah’s television/film work and Peckinpah documentaries/books/interviews/articles are invaluable. I did notice that some English-language interviews with Peckinpah were missing, although to be fair the title is “Some Peckinpah Interviews” so perhaps only the most exemplary ones were selected for inclusion. Also included in the appendix are images of cameos by Peckinpah and others, as well as stills from several cut scenes with an expected principal focus on “Major Dundee”.

The English-language documentary is referred to in the book as “Passion & Poetry: The Journey of Sam Peckinpah”. The ultimate choice of “Ballad” over “Journey” much better evokes the lyrical, albeit more visual than verbal, nature of Peckinpah’s work. While in one sense this is a traditional 'talking heads' documentary, the narration by Monte Hellman is kept to an absolute minimum and serves just to keep the narrative flowing. This creates an intensely personal documentary which essentially amounts to Peckinpah in his own words and the words of those who knew him best. While the judicious editing of any footage necessarily affects viewers’ responses, there are gratefully no subjective opinions being foisted upon the viewer here. I have not yet listened to Mike’s commentary that accompanies the documentary. The bonus disc begins with a three-part documentary “Stories on a Storyteller” that runs for around 1 ¾ hours in total. This seems to be an extension of the main feature containing items that Mike did not want to abandon but could not squeeze into its already ample running time. The same could be said for the extra “Ernie on the Wild Bunch” which consists of the full interview with Ernest Borgnine from which the shippets in the documentary were drawn. The two other extra features, “Mapache Territory” and “Mike’s Home Movies”, respectively document a visit to the original location of the shootout at the end of “The Wild Bunch” and several Peckinpah retrospectives organized by Mike. The DVD set also contains extensive liner notes in German, although there is apparently an article by Mike on the production in issue 3 of Cinema Retro which I am now very eager to read. From a technical perspective, it is a real shame that the DVD is not anamorphic. The box lists 1.78:1 as the aspect ratio but the main feature is actually around 1.66:1 as are some of the features on the bonus disc.  This does make zooming rather frustrating as this keeps having to be adjusted depending on what feature is being watched.

Needless to say, both the book (which is sadly out-of-print now) and the DVD set are wholeheartedly recommended. Thanks again Mike! I am now very much looking forward to the next "Passion & Poetry" installment on the French Wild Side Blu-ray of "The Killer Elite".

Seems like you can now order 10 as a digital edition which will at least allow you to read it. However, seeing as you are collecting them, I guess that won't help much.

By the way, is anyone interested in selling me issue #3? I have a copy of issue #13 which I'd be willing to trade.

I'm assuming the following are all the other Passion & Poetry installments:

- Passion & Poetry: Major Dundee (on Columbia Tristar / Sony DVD)
- Passion & Poetry: Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs (on Euro Video DVD)
- Passion & Poetry: The Early Sam (on Koch Media DVD of "The Deadly Companions")
- Passion & Poetry: Sam Peckinpah’s War (on Kinowelt/Optimum BD of "Cross of Iron")
- Passion & Poetry: Sam’s Killer Elite (on Wildside DVD of "The Killer Elite")

Personally I've only seen the "Major Dundee" one and "The Cross of Iron" one. I can't really afford to buy the other discs just for the documentaries, although I will be buying "The Killer Elite" when released (in spite of the forced subs).

btw just bought the DVD from amazon it - with postage it came out under 19E - much cheaper than amazon DE
Also bought from spanish amazon Companeros Mortales - 2 DVD edition and Killer Elite - 2 DVD edition - still don't have blu ray player - and it is a shame that cross of iron and Major Dundee - wouldn't have DVD editions also - would like so much to replace my hen tooth edition of Cross of iron which is in 4:3 format :( Major Dundee i have extended edition DVD and kino version from TV - so it'll pass somehow - but Cross of iron would rather like to have on 2 dvd SE edition

Hi Sergej,
I'm afraid I have only 2 copies left. Amazon Germany always has market sellers offering some copies, 'hopefully some of them will ship outside of Germany (shipping is expensive, the book is heavy).

Sooner or later you will have blu-ray :)
I'm co-producing my 3rd Sam blu-ray and I don't have a blu-ray player yet ! (CROSS OF IRON was announced a 2-disc DVD in Germany, but they foolishly changed their mind and instead of all supplements included the boring 'sequel' BREAKTHROUGH)

(CROSS OF IRON was announced a 2-disc DVD in Germany, but they foolishly changed their mind and instead of all supplements included the boring 'sequel' BREAKTHROUGH)

thnx mike for your reply and even more for your work

I purchased the Mike Siegel "Passion and Poetry" and it is essential.  A set I would never want to be without. Kudos to Mike!

BUT... it's always announced as All Region.  Mine is Region 2 ONLY.  (I have an international machine, but my other three Region A machines will NOT play it.)  Is something wrong with my copy?

Hi Robert,

welcome aboard!
I'm happy you liked PASSION & POETRY. With 'only 4 1/2 hours running time I could only cover a limited area regarding Sam's work. I try to widen that scope with the supplements I produce for DVD and Blu-ray releases. 10 hours so far :) ALFREDO GARCIA being next in line in March.
As for the region question, I'm puzzled. Can anybody confirm similar problems? Maybe yours has a problem, yes. Because it definetely IS Region 0 which translates as 'codefree'. The only comments I got regarding the DVD's German origin had been some buyers who's players could only play NTSC. And codefree or not, PAL it is of course. Strange nevertheless. Maybe your players do ONLY accept 'A' and nothing besides ?

It might indeed be a PAL/NTSC issue.

Some TV manufacturers block PAL input in the US (probably to block cheap exports) so if the DVD player does not have a PAL to NTSC converter it won't play. I think Panasonic and Samsung are often problems while LG and Sony are not, but it can vary depending on the TV set as well so you can't just shop on brand.

Ideally of course you want a TV that supports both because any kind of conversion affects image quality.

No, Mike, I have three A locked Blu-ray machines: a Sony, Samsung and LG.  I have an Oppo International.  The "Passion & Poetry" IS only R1.  It will only play on the international machine.

I have many imported Blu-rays and DVDs, and I know when they are region-free (e.g., the UK Blu-ray of "Match Point", "Katyn", and the French "Danton" which all play on all my US Blu-ray machines.)

I assure you, my copy of "Passion & Poetry" is only R1.

By the way, I have Mike Siegel's "Convoy", "Killer Elite", "Cross of Iron" (Blu-Rays) and "Deadly Companions" (German DVD).  I will be getting the two-disc "Straw Dogs" in the future.  Anything with his name on it, I cannot live without.  I just wish Siegel's documentaries and editions came out in America!  (Why not?)

PS: Other region-free DVDs (from U.K., for example) play on ALL my machines, so it isn't the PAL problem.

Make sure your TV is accepting a PAL signal (look if it says 576p rather than 480p). If it says 480p for a PAL DVD then the signal is being converted to NTSC by the player for your TV either because the player is fixed to do that regardless or because your TV won't accept PAL and hence the player is switching the output. Your region A BD players might not be able to output PAL at all which is why they may be struggling. Your multi-region BD player might only give unconverted PAL in region B and unconverted NTSC in region A; for PAL in region A for example, it might well be using a converter which the region A locked players do not have.

Of course there could be a problem with the DVD.
For instance I bought the Italian BD of Leone's GIU LA TESTA. Same code as here in Germany of course. I watched it. Love that film :).
Two weeks I wanted to check a scene and it refused to play! Said 'wrong region code!' I took it to a friend - same issue!
Yesterday I tried again - and it played... Gives you headaches really.

Robert, I appreciate your enthusiasm. In case you are rich: just invite me to Florida and I'll bring you STRAW DOGS + dozens of hours of footage on Sam Peckinpah that will make your heart cheer with joy :).

Well, make sure to get ALFREDO GARCIA (Twilight Time Blu-ray USA) before it is sold out. THey have only a 3000 printing. They released CHRISTINE on BD (I'm into vintage cars a lot), I missed it and now they charge 100.- or whatever at Amazon. Crazy :)
GARCIA is my first deal with America since MAJOR DUNDEE (DVD in 2005). It is a difficult market, unfortunately. With the majors it is very tough to make dealy, certain films one can't even locate the rightholders. And there's is still the issue to learn about planned releases in time! Sometimes I learn about a release and it is too late.

AND LET'S NOT FORGET - HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM !

Thanks so much, Mike.

O I WISH I WERE THAT RICH!!!!  (And how I wish I could see the 'dozens of hours' on Peckinpah!!!   (Sigh!)

Yes, Happy Birthday, Old Gila Monster!

PS: I've already ordered "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" on Blu-ray.

Robert

It sounds like you have it bad. Sam Peckinpah under your skin.
I have it along with other true believers, I've had it since I walked out of my local cinema on a cold November evening in 1969 after I saw the Wild Bunch, Sam changed my life. I've never been the same since.
Keep up the good work.

Jeff

Other than memories of my father watching "The Rifleman", first run (not knowing anything about who created the show), I first became aware of Sam Peckinpah when I happened to turn on the TV in the middle of "Ride the High Country" on "Saturday Night at the Movies".  It had commercials, pan & scan (of course) and in black-and-white, and the final shoot-out completely blew me away.  At that time the networks would cut off the main titles and show them at the end, so I watched the credits after the film and saw the name "Sam Peckinpah."  For some reason, even though I hadn't seen the first half of the film, I remembered the name.

Several years later when my sister was in high school, she came home and said her class was reading Katharine Anne Porter's "Noon Wine" and they all had to watch it on TV that night as an assignment.  She and I sat mesmerized through the show.  But when I saw the credits, it had the name "Sam Peckinpah" as director.  "Hey," I said, "that's the same name I saw on that western film I had seen on TV!!!"

The rest is history.

Perhaps Mike Siegel will seek an American publisher for a USA edition of the book?

In English?

No, I don't have the connections nor the time to find an US publisher.

It would be a whole different book anyway - since 2003 my archive on Sam doubled and I'd choose at least 500 different photos :).
It looks though like the Japanese are picking it up and I will make use then of those 'recent' additions to my archive.

Awesome news. Will the text be the same or modified? Any idea of a release date?

Well I only speak 8 Japanese words, so I won't really know what in the end will end up on the pages :).
I will concentrate on delivering first class scarce images. The image quality and the lay-out in the German edition (a miracle I could do it anyway) isn't that great. It is not bad either, but I'm spoiled when it comes to photos. When I did the McQueen book two years ago they let me do the visuals 99% my way and quality-wise it shows I guess :)
