Title: blu-ray THE KILLER ELITE - another Passion & Poetry entry
Post by mike bishop on 11/22/12 at 11:16am
I'm just finishing work on the new French KILLER ELITE blu-ray / DVD. For that I just edited PASSION & POETRY - SAM's KILLER ELITE, running time approx 28 min. For this new release I will also prepare the 3 US TV spots, 5 little Radio Spots featurettes, the trailer and a featurette 'Posters & lobby cards'.

More news will follow :)

Just to echo' the others, this is great news! I don't think the film has had a decent release on the home market yet. All of Peckinpah's films deserve the special edition treatment so it is nice to see The Killer Elite will finally be getting it. I'll have to pick this one up when it comes out!

Seeing as it is a French release, I really hope that it does not have locked in French subs.

I just heard the subtitles are locked. If it's part of the agreement, a DVD label cannot help it. It's very possible that the subtitles are only in the black widescreen mask area, not in the film frame. I will soon know..

Here are some first details (no locked subtitles with the supplements):

THE KILLER ELITE  /  DVD – Blue-ray    supplements

- documentary  PASSION & POETRY – Sam’s Killer Elite
                             28 min. / english – stereo / letterbox 4:3

- US TV – spots    (3 different, 0:30 sec. each, 4:3 mono)

- US Radio-spots featurettes (animated color & b/w photos)
                                 (5 different, 4x 0:30 sec., 1x 0:60 sec., 4:3 stereo)

- featurette ‘promoting The Killer Elite’ (international Posters, lobby cards etc.)
                                        04:14 min., 4:3 stereo

This happens often with the french editions. Too bad.

Like the cover though

Received my copy yesterday.

My player allowed me to remove the subtitles once the feature was playing  :)

DVD or Blu-ray?
Sounds great. All subs removable?

I just checked just the DVD.
Only removable subs here are with
the French CUT version (and who wants to see that anyway)

Blu-ray.

I can remove the subs on both versions. Weird that the DVD isn't the same?

I bought it on DVD, I confirm non-removable subtitles (not a problem for me, my english is not great and my french, however, very good).
I have to check, but I think the "director's cut" is the italian cut...
The documentary is truly exceptional. :)

It's weird that they treated the BD and the DVD differently regarding subtitles. As I mentioned before the BD definitely allows removal on both versions:

Well I went back to my DVD, and the subtitles are removeable. That is, with both feature versions - not the supplements (it should have been the other way around). Could be you have to forward the film, remove the subtitles, and then go back to the start...

The "Director's Cut" seems the normal 122’ MGM's cut (so is the French theatrical version to been cut) and – I suppose – the Italian theatrical version (but I have to check, because "Cross of Iron", for example, in Italy was cut than the American version).
I will check also if the subtitles are removable in the way that Mike said…

Finally got my copy. Great job Mike as always! It's nice to see one of Peckinpah's later films get a good transfer. I really hope more start to pop up on Blu-ray in more regions. I realize this won't help many but I play Blu-rays through a computer and for me the subtitles were on by default but could be turned off with no problem.

Waiting for the price to drop a bit on that one, but got the WB BR for 6 bucks and Alfredo Garcia for 11. Oh yeah.

According to the director Shinji Aoyama:

Quote:
No other movie has taught me as much about human dignity as The Killer Elite. No one will believe me, but this is true! I sacrificed Ozu’s work in favour of this movie, and that should say a lot about my feeling for Peckinpah’s film.

Wow, now there is a bit of trivia I was not aware of!

I guess I'm going to have to rewatch The Killer Elite as, obviously, it seems I have mised a lot if someone can see something like this in it...

I always liked it. Mostly because of the combination Caan-Young-Hopkins. Especially Burt Young. And the beautiful San Francisco location photography really comes across on the wonderful new master.
It also has one of the worst bloopers in Sam's films (apart from the usual car problems, the damage on the yellow cab changes all the time): When night falls in Duvall phones during daylight while at the same time (few miles away) it is dark night.

I would love to see the ending with Hopkins coming back to life and the three friends sailing off laughing. Why was such an ending possible in Freebie and the Bean (with Alan Arkin reappearing after his death to joke around with James Caan) just one year earlier, and not in The Killer Elite is beyond me.

Seriously, a great movie! Always wanted a special edition.... Never gonna happen but at least it is out in widescreen on DVD. Would love a Blu-ray of it... Wishful thinking at this point but hopefully someday.

Yeah, at least until they decide to sell the WB Archive titles on BR

I just went patiently through both cuts of the film, and I'm sorry to say - although I prefer Peckinpah to Ozu - I still prefer Ozu to the Killer elite...
But the extras are great!
Oh and by the way, I have the DVD, and subtitles are removable on all features.

Come to think of it: do we know if Peckinpah knew Ozu's films?

Probably you all have it already but Twilight Time is giving discount on The Killer Elite/Noon Wine - the price is 10$ lower - 19,99$ - i saw it on Screenarchives.com - and took it now mainly because of Noon Wine but i don't have blu ray player still - so it will have to wait for some time more

Major Dundee is reduced, to $24.95, and a host of other TT releases are also on sale, to celebrate the label's 4th anniversary.  The sale runs until Friday, 3 April.  Details here:

I've ordered four, non-Peckinpah-related, titles.

Twilight time have done some great releases. They are also Peckinpah fans which explains why Garcia, The Killer Elite (+ Noon Wine) and Major Dundee have all been released by them. I would really like them to get hold of Junior Bonner too.

One thing I have never understood is why in the US Twilight Time needs a limited edition financial model while in the UK companies like Arrow can release the same film without it needing to be limited. Perhaps in spite of the smaller population size, you still see better sales of these older films in the UK rather than the US?
