Title: PENDECHOS! Crowdfunding Project / restoring my first feature film
Post by mike bishop on 11/06/14 at 6:28am
Dear friends and fellow film fans,

I just started a crowdfunding project to help restore and release my 1999 feature film PENDECHOS! (former title: ROADRUNNER).
This gangster - roadmovie was shot on Super-16mm and was the very first project I ever did, therefore it is very dear to my heart. It was inspired by a meeting with US filmmaker Robert Rodriguez who had told me how he had produced his EL MARIACHI for some $7,000.-. We did it then and it was a great adventure. Everything I learned I used shortly afterwards for my Sam Peckinpah-film PASSION & POETRY – THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH.

Like EL MARIACHI I shot PENDECHOS! on film and edited on video, therefore I have to go back and transfer the complete 6 hour film negative for a new cut (HD quality). I will use the opportunity to use whatvever I have learned since then and will give the film a new narrative, new sound, a new look etc. etc.
But this is way beyond my possibilities regarding financing, hence this cowdfunding project.
I appreciate any kind of help – promotion, word-of-mouth propaganda, links …

But of course you can help best this project if you support us, for instance purchasing a DVD/Blu-ray upfront, just visit the crowdfunding website (there’s also a short video with film scenes and behind the scenes footage), any kind of interest from your side is much appreciated:

PENDECHO = PENDEJO (spanish for ''idiot'' or words of that effect)

I finished all the English text at the project page (see above link).
You'll find the button the activate the English language version
at the top right, next to my profile photo...

I hope some of you will find the time and support the film - the DVD/Blu-ray you'll get in return will be Region 0 (codefree) and bilingual.. (German/English).
The independent, guerilla film making cinema needs you :).

Can't login or change my password (Nate, please).
So here I have ANOTHER registration.

No comments or re-actions at all regarding my crowdfunding project?
A bit disappointing. Quite a big thing for me: until recently
PENDECHOS! was supposed to be my first blu-ray release.
Now there's suddenly other news: PASSION & POETRY
will be released on blu-ray in Japan next year!

A short PENDECHOS teaser that plays our local cinemas here:

Please check your email or the messages for this account! I didn't realize you were still locked out! As for the film/ crowdfunding, no excuse for not posting yet but this happens to be a very busy time of the year for me right now. I haven't had time to do lot but I think it is great and I meant to ask you about the film years ago!

If you're getting a small theatrical release, can't you offer some of the revenue you'd otherwise be making in lieu of production fees?

Won't you need to remaster all the footage in order to do this? I thought Passion & Poetry was great, but my only complaint was that the DVD wasn't anamorphic and the aspect ratios varied slightly between the main feature and the extras.

NATE!
Thanks so much for joining the bunch at our crowdfunding project !!!
Since I suppose you won't be here for the premiere and partying,
I'll sure find another way of thanking you with some scarce film-related
jewels stored away here :).

I will now work extra-hard to save this old feature of mine.

Don't be so modest :).
It is difficult to interest fellow Peckinpah-fans in a non-Peckinpah-related project project of mine, so I appreciate it even more!

Jean-Gaspard and Stephen Marzella came aboard and most prominently you.
And now you are all in great company since Lilia joined us as well! Finally a bit of 'real' Sam in PENDECHOS!
I love Lilia :) Muchisimas Gracias!

Hello Mike, it's a GREAT honor to meet you by this forum, your film "Passion & Poetry" is really an incredible gift for all Peckinpah-fans with lot of information and interviews ! I bought your book too, and, although I don't speak German, I marvel what a great collection of photos and posters you have, and I want to say a big THANK YOU for your extraordinary work.  :)

Tu habites en Marseille?
Do they have a film festival :). You should push a Peckinpah retrospective en Marseille. I always wanted to see that city!!

PASSION & POETRY is on French TV this spring by the way.
TNT. And out on Blu-ray in Japan soon...

Wish I could do another Sam-book, by now the archive is soo much bigger & better :). I'm sure you would enjoy my McQueen book (Steve McQueen - The Actor & his Films). Another 500 pages with 1000 photos, but much better quality...

Vive la France. Particulierment dans cettes temps difficile.

My favorite French poster, right next to our couch :).

Merci beaucoup Mike ! Yes, I'm living in Marseille for 4 years, before I lived in the East of France (near Germany !) Marseille is a very beautiful city, please come on for a Peckinpah restrospective here ! I've seen "Passion & Poetry" with French subtitles in TCM Channel.

Ok I will look for this new book about Steve McQueen.
It's a lovely poster of Brigitte Bardot and a very good film, but, you know, I'm a girl, actresses are not my favorites...  ;D

Yes !! Pierrot le Fou !  ;)
Good choice !  [smiley=kiss.gif]
What a great film. The end is... explosive...
I'm very impressed by your collection, it's totally incredible !!  :o
One of my favorite director is a German, Werner Herzog  ;)
And I discovered Peckinpah with "The wild Bunch" when I was younger, I was student in a School of Art, and I was... really shocked, horrified ! I cried at the end, really ! I was too young and I needed lot of time to see it again... And one day, I saw it again. And I said : "Oh my God ! It's a Masterpiece !"  :o So I was shocked again, but in the right way !  ;D And I wanted to see all Peckinpah's films...

Here's a short restoration comparison video. After 200 hrs of work the sound effects track is almost finished. My decision to make the film in Super 16mm (with a self-modified 1970 Bolex camera) really pays off now, it looks better than some vintage 35mm films.

QUALITÄTSVERGLEICH, PENDECHOS! 1999 und 2015 :)

Wow - big difference. Amazing how back in the day VHS didn't seem to look so bad...

By the way, what is the benefit to the shooter of holding a pistol sideways or is it just a film thing?

Well that reference shows a 2nd or 3rd generation copy, the BetaCam master of course looked better back in 1997 of - but not nearly as good as the HD scan now of course. The final result should look like your common 'classic' Blu-ray these days since my HD scan comes directly from the Super 16 CAMERA negative while vintage 35mm films already lost a generation from camera negative to first cut negative.

The 'sideways' shooting became a bad cliche in the late 90s and beyond. I let them sometimes do it in the film, a mistake :).  Hopefully it was so long ago people don't even remember :). It was sort invented in 90s independent gangster cinema purely because it sort of looked cool. But you don't shoot like that in reality of course. Don't try it, I did...

Looks like a fun event.

What did the audience think of the film? Were there any local journalists/critics hovering around?

I always get a lot of press around here, at least 10 articles in 14 days, some full-page... Besides my ol' neighbor Roland Emmerich nobody is into film making here, they are all busy producing Mercedes & Porsche... (the audience liked it. I enhanced the 1999 version quite a bit. I mean I should have learned SOMETHING in 17 years :) ). Not sure whether the humor will come across in English (subtitled). Sooner or later I will know :).
